Some courses have their own home pages. Follow the links indicated.

Note: Refer to the appropriate Undergraduate Physics Program Information before reading these course descriptions. Note that Hunter College's developmental codes DX and DM apply to all Physics and Astronomy courses.

Science 101, 102: Foundations of Science

6 hours, 4.5 cr. each semester. Both 101 and 102 must be taken for credit. A study of the nature of science following the historical development of such major concepts as the laws of planetary motion, Newton's laws of motion, the atomic theory, and evolution. Lectures are accompanied by labs and frequent writing assignments. Home Page for This Course

Astronomy 100: Basic Concepts in Astronomy

3 hours, 3 cr. Introductory one semester astronomy course designed for non-science majors. Home Page for This Course

Astronomy 107: Laboratory Exercises in Astronomy

3 hours, 1 cr. Laboratory exercises in astronomy, to observe the major features of the night sky, demonstrate the physical basis of astronomical instruments, and experiment with astronomical phenomena. Astronomy 100 is a pre or co requisite.
The combination of Astronomy 100 and 107 satisfies the Hunter College Distribution requirement of a lab science. Astronomy 110 by itself satisfies the non-lab science requirement.

Physics 101: Basic Concepts of Physics

6 hours (3 lec., 3 lab) 4-cr. introductory physics course designed for those requiring a one semester terminal physics course.

Physics 110: General Physics: Introductory Course in Mechanics, Heat, and Sound (Uses College Algebra)

7 hours (3 lec., 3 lab, 1 rec.), 4.5 cr. Prereq.: MATH 120 or equivalent by Mathematics Department exam. An introductory physics course in mechanics, heat, and sound. First semester of two semester introductory physics course using college-level algebra. Home Page for This Course.

Physics 111: General Physics: Introductory Course in Mechanics, Heat, and Sound (Uses Calculus)

8 hours (4 lec., 3 lab, 1 rec.), 5.5 cr. Prereq. (or coreq. with perm.): MATH 150. First semester of a two semester introductory calculus-based physics course. Required for majors.

Physics 120: General Physics: Introductory Course in Electricity and Magnetism, Light, and Atomic Physics (Uses College Algebra)

7 hours (3 lec., 3 lab, 1 rec.), 4.5 cr. Prereq: PHYS 110 or PHYS 111. An introductory physics course in electricity, magnetism, atomic physics, and light. Second semester of PHYS 110, a 2-semester introductory physics course using algebra. Home Page for This Course

Physics 121: General Physics: Introductory Course in Electricity and Magnetism, Light, and Atomic Physics (Uses Calculus)

8 hours (4 lec., 3 lab, 1 rec.), 5.5 cr. Prereq: PHYS 110 or PHYS 111. Prereq. (or coreq. with perm.): MATH 155. An introductory physics course in electricity, magnetism, light, and atomic physics. Second semester of PHYS 111, a 2-semester introductory physics course using calculus. Required for majors.

Physics 130 to 133: Preprofessional Science: Core I, II, III, and IV

The Core curriculum is a two-year introductory science course that integrates physics, chemistry and pre-calculus mathematics. The program strives to provide a supportive, stimulating, and rigorous experience in the quantitative sciences for students through innovative curricula, strong peer and faculty support, and exposure to scientific research.
